This class provides continuing theatre students with advanced actor training, emphasizing a broad understanding of dramatic literature and training in the specialized skills of playwriting, design and directing. This is a performance-centered class, with possible rehearsals, performances, and travel required outside of scheduled class time. As students gain skills and experience, they explore the relationships among technology, theatre, and the related arts. Students receive an emphatic focus on technical roles such as stage manager, as well as lighting, costume and sound design. Improvisation, creative dramatics, and beginning scene work are used to introduce students to acting and character development. The class provides opportunities to develop skills in critical listening and thinking, as well as stage presence, ensemble work, and aesthetic awareness. The work of William Shakespeare returns to Walden with a comedy! A group of soldiers return from the war. The world-weary Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly, deeply in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship. When her older sister Raizel was ordered to report to a Nazi forced labor camp, Sala volunteered to take her place. Through letters from family and friends that she managed to hide and keep safe, Letters to Sala tells the story of one young woman's experiences in the most inhumane and unimaginable of situations.
